A Poopie Story by Right Recently Sassy had a potty problem. One day when Mom went to work, Sassy did a little poopie in front of the back door. Mom comes home and steps in it. Ok!!! We have a problem. Turns out Jeffie used the wrong kind of litter in her litter box and she was protesting. Protesting because she didn't like it, and protesting that Jessie did, and had the nerve to use HER litter box.
We are amazing creatures, full of surprises and mystery, among which are our potty habits. Litter and litter boxes play a significant role in the health and happiness of us cats AND our humans. Selecting the right combination of the two can make us very happy indeed. I think it is one of the most important things humans can do for their cats. An interesting aspect of litter and boxes is that they must meet the needs of two: the cat and the human. Sometimes humans can have a hard time determining what makes everyone happy. Just when your human thinks she has figured out all the answers, you come along and change all the questions.
Number one priority is odor control, then comes environmentally friendly litters. In our house we use three different kinds of litter. Left likes the clay litter, his box is out on the screen porch, odor is no problem out there. Next we have Jessie who thinks she does great sculptures in her box and she likes the scoopable feline pine litter, mom also likes it because there is hardly any smell, but Sassy is another matter. Her box has to have a specific brand of litter, the box has to be the right size and it has to be away from the other cats. She doesn't like it if anyone uses her box, and she wants it cleaned before she uses it again. Nothing fussy about her, and she gives you a choice, either do it her way or she poops on the floor. So we installed her litter box in the large dog crate she stayed in while she was sick. None of the other cats will go in there, so she feels safe. Since she is the baby, and the weaker of the bunch, they all pick on her, sometimes all at once. So giving her a safe and happy litter box is not a hard thing to do. Mom always did like her best.......
